Green Cells leading the Green Transition
TALEA addresses the climate emergency in Bologna, focusing on heatwaves and urban heat islands. At its core are the TALEA Green Cells, 100×100 m modules combining nature-based solutions, design, and advanced technologies.
At the macro scale they form ecological corridors linking green areas and boosting biodiversity; at the micro scale they regenerate public spaces and provide climate shelters, improving comfort and safety for citizens.
TALEA integrates sustainability, social and economic dimensions, and technology through the Smart Innovation Package, a digital ecosystem of sensors, simulations, AI, and tools. Co-creation and citizen science engage citizens in design, care, and building shared responsibility
European cities face growing climate pressure from Urban Heat Islands, threatening health, sustainability, and liveability. TALEA responds with modular Nature-Based Solutions that deliver measurable climate adaptation while enhancing biodiversity, social inclusion, and community engagement in dense urban contexts.
Key Impacts:
- Climate adaptation: Reduced surface temperatures and Urban Heat Island effects
- Biodiversity: Ecological corridors reconnecting urban habitats
- Social inclusion and health: Better access to green spaces and improved thermal comfort
- Digital innovation: Data-driven planning through sensors, Digital Twins, and citizen apps
- Scalability: Sustainable financing models and replicable governance aligned with EU climate goals
- Development of the “Human Sensing” App: R2M develops a mobile application based on Augmented Reality (AR) and Artificial Intelligence, enabling citizens and stakeholders to submit reports, suggestions, and feedback on green areas. The app makes data accessible to both public authorities and the community, while supporting social innovation processes.
- Co-design and environmental impact simulation: R2M contributes to the simulation and co-design activities of the Green Cells, using innovative tools to calculate KPIs through the GreenPass software, guiding design choices towards optimal solutions.
- Development of governance and financial models (WP5): R2M analyses and defines sustainable governance models and financial schemes for the management of the Green Cells and to support the green transition.
- Decision Support System (DSS): R2M contributes to the development of an integrated decision support system for KPI calculation, supporting the assessment of the environmental and social impact of TALEA solutions.
- Contribution to the Urban Atlas (SUOA): R2M collaborates with the Bruno Kessler Foundation on the development of the Systemic Urban Observation Atlas (SUOA).
