Innovative Communities On Neutral Islands for Climate

ICONIC is a forward-looking project designed to enhance energy independence, climate neutrality, and sustainable development in rural and island communities across Europe.

The project responds to current challenges empowering local governance and citizens to lead the climate transition through social and technical innovations.

These innovations are tested through real-world pilot demonstrations in rural islands across Europe where the project works closely with local stakeholders: Berchidda, La Graciosa and Aran Islands

The Main impact of ICONIC are:

  • Climate Leadership & Energy Independence: Achieving 100% Climate Neutrality: ICONIC empowers islands to become energy-independent hubs, creating their own clean, self-generated power systems to meet climate goals and drastically reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
  • Revitalization & Community Strength: Reversing Depopulation: By fostering stronger community ties, creating local, sustainable jobs, and enhancing overall wellbeing, ICONIC transforms rural islands into attractive, resilient places to live and work.
  • Pioneering Cross-European Solutions: A Blueprint for Innovation: We are delivering cutting-edge technological, social, and organizational solutions for climate neutrality and biodiversity, establishing a replicable model applicable across Europe’s diverse climatic and geographical zones.

R2M IT Role:

  • Scenario Architect: Developing customized, high-impact Decarbonization Scenarios for the pilot sites, ensuring the transition to net-zero is effective and achievable.
  • Local Catalyst: Providing direct, hands-on support to the Berchidda municipality, transforming abstract climate goals into concrete, implementable action plans for sustainable governance and energy independence.
