4tunaTES
For Tunable Thermochemical Energy Storage
4TunaTES addresses one of the key barriers to the energy transition: the lack of flexible, long-term and loss-free heat storage solutions to support renewable energy integration.
The project develops a breakthrough Thermo-Chemical Energy Storage (TCES) technology that is adaptable to multiple applications and temperature ranges, drastically reducing development costs and accelerating market uptake.
By combining advanced materials, flexible system design and electricity-adapted thermodynamic cycles, 4TunaTES unlocks the potential of thermal energy storage for domestic and beyond, with strong relevance for the built environment.
4TunaTES delivers a flexible TCES prototype for domestic use by developing tunable thermochemical materials, highly adaptable heat-exchanging components, and innovative system architectures designed for variable thermal demand.
This integrated approach enables long-term, compact and efficient heat storage, overcoming the application-specific limitations of current TCES solutions.
Expected impacts:
- High heat storage density (≥200 kWh/m³ at system level) with constant power output
- Efficient use of low- and ultra-low-temperature heat (40–80°C), including waste heat
- Reduced R&D and deployment costs (up to –90%) through technology flexibility
- Support to renewable energy integration and decarbonisation of the built environment
R2M Solution leads exploitation and market-oriented activities, supporting the transition from research to real-world application through:
- Market and value-chain analysis for flexible TCES technologies
- Identification of priority use cases and application scenarios (with focus on buildings)
- Definition of exploitation strategies and business models for project outcomes
- Support to partners in aligning technical developments with market needs and policy drivers
