Active RoofTops South Europe

The aRTes (Active RoofTops South Europe) initiative focuses on transforming underused rooftops in Southern Europe into sustainable and resilient communal areas, aligning with the European Renovation Wave and New European Bauhaus principles.

The project introduces innovative solutions like a smart PV Pergola for energy generation and shading, a durable Perimetral Wall from recycled materials, as well as digital tools to remove complexities, encourage transformation and manage local urban farming.

aRTes mission is to transform these spaces into accessible, efficient, safe, and multifunctional areas that enhance urban life and integrate seamlessly with the city’s social and ecological landscape.

Southern European cities possess numerous underutilized rooftops due to favorable climates and historical factors, offering significant potential to enhance urban sustainability and resilience. The aRTes project aims to transform these spaces into accessible, efficient, safe, and multifunctional areas, reducing carbon emissions and mitigating the urban heat island effect, in line with the European Renovation Wave.

List of Expected Impacts:

  • Promotes green energy generation and advanced insulation to reduce energy costs, carbon emissions, and the potential for Positive Energy District creation.
  • Increases circularity and sustainability, using Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and Circularity indicators, maximizing recycled materials and adhering to circularity principles.
  • Engaging citizens in co-design to incorporate greenery and leisure spaces aligns with New European Bauhaus principles and contributes to urban beauty.
  • Rooftops are redesigned as community spaces for leisure, hobbies, and urban farming, fostering social ties and providing green open areas for diverse groups
  • The project offers tools and guidelines to help beneficiaries assess rooftop potential, comply with regulations, and plan renovations.
  •  Providing local green areas and services, and preparing rooftops for drone-based urban logistics, can reduce urban traffic, pollution, and CO2 emissions.
  • Green solutions, like the Raised Floor, PV pergola, and urban farming, absorb heat and help retain and potentially reuse rainwater.
  • Using unused spaces for small-scale urban farming and installing green solutions supports habitats for plants and insects, increasing urban biodiversity.
  • Upgraded rooftops can increase the value of buildings by improving energy efficiency, aesthetics, and overall desirability.

R2M’s role involves several key areas:

  • Developing applications and services related to the Vertical Farming solution.
  • Assessing the technical feasibility of the drone-based urban logistics solution.
  • Providing support for the co-design of urban renovation projects.
  • Contributing to the analysis of life cycle and circularity for constructive solutions.
  • Developing digital tools for rooftop planning, monitoring, and creating 3D Virtual Tours and Digital Twins.
  • Participating in GIS Mapping and Spatial analysis for drone-ready rooftops.
  • Leading the task for Generative AI bot providing simflified navigation to legal information
  • Contributing to the piloting activities, including planning, deployment, and performance assessment.
  • Supporting the communication, exploitation, and project management efforts.
