Effective Substation TEchnoLogies for Advanced viRtualization
The ESTELAR project aims to modernize Europe’s power grids by focusing on the virtualization of substations. This is essential for securely integrating more renewable energy sources and making the entire grid infrastructure more resilient and sustainable, accelerating the transition to a climate-neutral economy.
ESTELAR builds on three innovative pillars: developing advanced communication strategies, creating a robust computational framework for efficient data handling, and designing the transformative Digital Substation of the Future.
These cutting-edge technologies will be rigorously tested and validated in two specialized Laboratories located in Spain and The Netherlands, to enable realistic and controlled testing, ensuring the technologies are fully refined and ready for broader implementation.
The ESTELAR project addresses the slow pace of digitalization in power grid substations, which is critical for the energy transition and achieving climate neutrality. It develops and validates virtualization technologies, advanced communications, and computing frameworks for the Digital Substation of the Future (DSoF) to create a more resilient, efficient, and secure electricity grid.
The project is expected to deliver the following impacts:
- Increase energy efficiency in distribution and transmission grids by an estimated 10-15% reduction in transmission losses, leading to an estimated reduction in GHG emissions by up to 20% in operational substations.
• Higher penetration of renewable energy sources by up to 30%. - Enhanced grid resilience by reducing downtime and response to grid disturbances by 40%.
- Improved electrification of electrical grids and substations, enabling the grid to handle up to a 50% increase in load.
- Data-driven decision making allowing for energy consumption efficiency improvement by 25%.
- Enhanced power grid cybersecurity, aiming to reduce cybersecurity incidents by 50%.
- Designs and implements the overall Communication, Dissemination, and Exploitation strategy and plan.
- Leads the identification and management of Key Exploitable Results (KERs) and the development of business models.
- Coordinates networking and synergies with other projects and initiatives.
- Leads the Techno-economic and environmental analysis of the project results
