Cost-effective and replicable Renewable Energy Sources integrated electrified heating and cooling systems for improved energy efficiency and demand response

SEEDS brings together a multidisciplinary team of SMEs, large enterprises, RTOs, and stakeholders covering the entire local value chain of building energy efficiency and thermal demand electrification, from design to operation. The project builds on the consortium’s extensive experience in developing, testing, and scaling decarbonization solutions, supervising real-life demonstrations, and deploying energy flexibility.

SEEDS demonstrates replicable heat pump solutions integrated with renewable energy to decarbonize buildings’ thermal demand. Scalable design and operational optimization methodologies are developed, multiple proven heat pump technologies are deployed at scale, and they are optimally integrated into buildings and the wider energy system. These solutions are showcased across 6 pilot sites (including one replication site) in different European climate zones and construction markets.

The project focuses on three main themes: cost efficiency, system integration, and replicability, addressed through 7 areas: iterative design, secure data platforms and IoT, energy optimization and flexibility, grid stability, replication strategies and business models, decision-making support, and dissemination.

With the reach and networks of its 26 partners, SEEDS aims to accelerate the electrification of thermal demand in buildings.

Heating and cooling account for nearly 70% of Europe’s energy use, yet most systems still rely on fossil fuels. SEEDS addresses this challenge by developing cost-effective, renewable, and smart electrified heating and cooling solutions that can be deployed across a wide variety of buildings. The project combines energy-efficient renovation, multi-source heat pumps, thermal storage, and advanced predictive control to increase energy efficiency, enhance indoor comfort, and unlock demand-side flexibility.

These solutions are being demonstrated in six full-scale pilot sites across Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Hungary, and Slovenia, covering diverse climates and building types (from heritage houses and student dormitories to office buildings and service stations). SEEDS shows how existing buildings can be decarbonised through integrated renovation strategies and renewable-based HVAC technologies. The project also leverages AI-enabled control and real-time data platforms to optimise operation according to energy prices, weather conditions, and grid needs.

Expected impacts include significant reductions in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions through wider deployment of heat pumps and renewable integration. By demonstrating demand-side flexibility and by enabling buildings to respond intelligently to variable electricity and heating prices, SEEDS contributes to grid stability and supports Europe’s transition towards a highly electrified energy system. The project offers scalable and replicable solutions that can be adopted by different regions and building typologies, helping accelerate decarbonisation while improving comfort and reducing operational costs for occupants.

R2M Solution France leads Dissemination, Communication and Stakeholder Outreach in SEEDS as the Work Package 8 leader. R2M designs and implements the project’s communication and dissemination strategy, manages the SEEDS digital presence, coordinates the production of communication materials and videos, and oversees stakeholder engagement across all pilot countries. R2M also ensures the collection and monitoring of Key Performance Indicators through a central D&C tracker, supports partners in reporting their activities, and contributes to building visibility, replication potential, and long-term impact for the project.
